Singing and playing at Progressive New Hope MBC and Mount Olive MBC, Brenda Waters made many like-minded and musically talented friends, among them Carl Preacher and Shirley Joiner.  This combination gave birth to the Southeast Inspirational Choir and from there God did his serendipity thing. On an occasion when Southeast could not sing on a program for which they had been engaged, Brenda Carl and Shirley went to pinch hit.  They needed a name, and so called themselves BC&S. Their phenomenal sound was matchless and still influences artists today.

Brenda penned and arranged many songs found on recordings of BC&S and Southeast. She also wrote, sang and arranged for diverse recording artists like Barbara Johnson Tucker, Leonard Burks, The Voices of Praise, The Johnny Thompson Singers, Donald Lawrence & The Tri-City Singers, Glenn Burleigh, The Angelics, Ebony Praise, Bishop Paul Morton and others. Music was central to Brenda’s life, but it was not her talent that called her deeper into ministry, but her love of God and God’s people. In 1976 she dedicated her life to church music ministry. God gave her a vision for singers as vessels of praise, which would call for singers to greater growth and dedication, not only musically but spiritually.

Her list of accomplishments, achievements and recognitions is too numerous to mention but include a Stellar award and a church music legacy. Her daughter, Hedreich, is a semi-retired church musician who subs in churches in DFW and maintains a presence in Europe even while teaching full time. Brenda’s grandson, Christopher, plays both upright and electric bass, and is the 5th generation church musician in the family. He currently serves as the youth staff bassist at The Potters House Fort Worth, where he continues Brenda’s great legacy of worship, music and a love of God and His people.

Carl B. Preacher was the second of three sons born to Peter and Ruth Preacher.  His beginnings were very humble, but the mark he left on the lives of people he touched is unforgettable and an incredible blessings to all who knew and loved him. Carl, as he was so lovingly called by most, was married to Dealia Preacher for over 34 years and to this union their son Doran Preacher was born.  Dealia was Carl’s top supporter in all of his endeavors.  She always encouraged him to continue to strive for excellence and he excelled in that area.  Dealia did not have a problem allowing Carl to spend countless days and nights molding and making what is now known as the famous Southeast Inspirational Choir.  She was always a big fan of the choir and their accomplishments.

Doran was Carl’s cheerleader for the choir, as a child, he traveled many places with his dad when Southeast went on tours during the summer.  Although Doran never officially joined the choir, you would not have known that he was not a choir member as much as he traveled with the choir and supported the ministry of his Dad. During the choir’s teenage years, not only did Carl write, produce and arrange many of their songs, he taught the youth to sing to the glory and honor of God through every verse and every rhythm. Carl also passionately taught the Word of God through bible study before each choir rehearsal. He wanted to make sure the members understood Southeast was not just about “singing”, but about reaching souls for Christ.

In addition to being co-director of Southeast, Carl’s gospel ministry spread throughout the local community and coast to coast.  Carl had the privilege of traveling with and playing for the gospel legend Sara Jordan Powell.  In her own words, Sara Jordan Powell expressed “Sir Carl Preacher served as a keyboardist extraordinaire and traveled with me for almost 14 years. His humble, quiet, pensive Godly spirit was always radiant, but his musical artistry coupled with God’s powerful anointing spoke volumes.  Carl’s demeanor was respectful yet playful. Wherever he ministered in the United States and abroad; namely Europe, South Asia, South East Asia, Canada and the Caribbean, Carl’s commitment to excellence in the Lord’s service remained as solid as a worthy worshipping vessel.”

Over the years, Carl served as Minister of Music and guest organist at: Christian Hope Baptist Church, New Day Deliverance Holiness Church, Bible Days Revival, Payne Chapel A.M.E., Pentecostal Baptist, Bethlehem Baptist, Vision of Praise, Trinity Fellowship and Holy Trinity Missionary Baptist Church in Houston and St. Luke Baptist in Galveston.

Carl formally acknowledged his calling to the ministry of the spoken Gospel on April 16, 1996 and had the support of his family, colleagues and community. Carl was recognized with numerous awards and citations as a result of his many achievements, having recorded over 30 albums and mentored artists such as Yolanda Adams, Gregory Curtis, Jennifer Holiday and Chris Walker to name a few.  He worked with many notable artists and received many awards for his passion and service.

Shirley Joiner

Gospel Artist Singer Writer Arrnage Musician Ms. Shirley BC&S Southeast Founder Outreach Baptist Church Rise' Joiner

SHIRLEY ANN JOINER was a sweet, but powerful musical Phenom. Her name is recognized around the world by many…even now. Music was literally her life story. Born in Houston, Texas to Johnnie and Elma Robinson, she was the eldest of five other siblings and began piano lessons at a very early age. She was found to be so gifted she became the primary musician of a local church at only 12 years old…and there began her passion for Gospel music. She continued to hone her skills under the guidance of her piano instructor, and soon became a well-known, requested musician and singer in Houston.

Joiner served as Minister of Music for the Outreach Missionary Baptist Church in Houston, TX, (from 1969) under the leadership of founding Pastor Rev. Lawrence Jarvis, Rev. John L. Hart, and Dr. L.L. Favorite (respectively) until her retirement in July 2005.  Even post retirement, she served faithfully in the ongoing ministry of the church as youth choir director, Christian education facilitator, discipleship class teacher and actively participating in the Women and Girls Ministry. Joiner likewise produced three recordings from the music ministry of Outreach Missionary Baptist Church. She groomed many musical gifts while serving in that capacity as well as throughout the US and abroad with her many music workshops and conferences.

She was one of the founding members of the world-renown Southeast Inspirational Choir as well as the dynamic trio of the `70's, B. C. & S., (Brenda Waters, Carl Preacher and Shirley Joiner). With both groups, Joiner co-produced numerous recordings. Joiner was the founder and Executive Director for the organization of community outreach to youth called P. H. D. (Preparing Holy Disciples). Through her vision, along with her staff, this outreach program was a continuation of the call of God on her life to inspire youth/young adults to use their gifts for the glory of God.

Joiner was likewise a business owner for over 20 years. She was the sole-proprietor of her family operated business, A-All About Music and All About Music, Too, located in the Southeast area of Houston and Rosharon, Texas respectively. There you could find her instructing students in the fine art of music appreciation while offering her expertise in the field and field of gospel music.  Although she appreciated and taught various genres, gospel music was her proficiency. She was a mentor to many young people and loved by all.

"Ms. Shirley" as she was affectionately called, when asked what was the key to her successful ministry, her response was always, "I made a commitment in the beginning that I would use the gift I have for gospel music, solely". She was a wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, business owner, dressmaker, entrepreneur, mentor, songwriter/musician, world traveler, artist; but more than that, a child of God.
